About the program
The program is funded by carbon credits your home charging generates.
How is the charger free?
When you charge your EV at home, it generates carbon credits under Canada's Clean Fuel Regulations. SWTCH pools those credits from members across the country and sells them. That revenue pays for your charger and funds your earnings.
Are there any fees?
There are no monthly or annual fees and no subscription. You pay a $300 refundable deposit and shipping when you order.
Which app do I need?
You need the SWTCH Home Charging Program app. It's a dedicated app for this program. The regular SWTCH app is for public charging and won't work with your home charger.
You can download the app from the App Store for iPhones and Play Store for Android phones.
Can I install more than one charger at my home?
Yes, as many as your electrical panel can support. Each home can get one free charger. Additional chargers can be purchased outright from this page. Earnings are tracked separately for each charger.
Can I use the charger on a different charging network?
No. Program chargers are pre-configured for the SWTCH Home Charging Program and can't be moved to a different OCPP network.
How do I change or cancel my order?
Before your order ships, you can change or cancel it from the order confirmation page. There's a link to it in your confirmation email.
Do I own the charger I receive through this program?
Yes, but subject to the SWTCH Home Charging Program's policies.
- You must register the charger within six months of receipt.
- Your deposit is only returned after you complete 1,500 kWh of charging.
- Your charger cannot be used with a different charging program, nor can it be migrated off of the SWTCH network.
Choosing your charger
The right model will depend on your wiring and your car.
Which charger should I choose?
Choose the plug-in model if you already have a NEMA 14-50 outlet, or if you plan to move and want to take the charger with you.
Choose the hardwired model if you're installing a new circuit (or have an existing hardwired EV charger circuit) and want the fastest charging.
What's the difference between plug-in and hardwired?
The plug-in model plugs into a NEMA 14-50 outlet and charges at up to 9.6 kW (40 amps). The outlet can also be shared with other equipment, such as an RV.
The hardwired model is wired directly into your panel by an electrician and charges at up to 11.5 kW (48 amps).
Which connector do I need?
Pick the connector that matches your car's charging port: J1772, which most older EVs in North America use, or NACS, the Tesla-style port, which most North American EVs use as of 2025.
What size breaker do I need?
The charger's current should be no more than 80% of the breaker's rating. A 40-amp charger needs at least a 50-amp breaker, and a 48-amp charger needs at least a 60-amp breaker. If your panel can't support that, the charger can be set to a lower current (see Installation and hardware).
How long is the charging cable?
25 feet (7.62 metres).
Do you send an electrician to install it?
No. Installation is up to you. The plug-in model is plug-and-play if you already have a NEMA 14-50 outlet. Otherwise, hire a licensed electrician.
Is the charger safety certified?
Yes. The SWTCH Home charger (EVL007) is ETL certified for Canada and the US, to CSA C22.2 and UL standards.

Setting up your charger
Most setup problems are fixed by updating the app and restarting the charger.
My charger won't charge after installation
If you have not already done so, please activate your charger in the SWTCH Home Charging Program app. Your charger will not work until you do so.
Tip: Download the app and create your account before installation day, so you can register and then test the charger while your electrician is still there.
I lost my sticker. Where's my serial number?
It's also on the box the charger came in and on the side of the charger.
I can't find the charger's Wi-Fi hotspot
During setup, your charger broadcasts its own network named EVL007_ followed by your serial number, for one hour after it powers on.
- Stand right next to the charger and scan again.
- Still nothing? Turn the charger off at the breaker, wait 30 to 60 seconds, then turn it back on. The hotspot restarts for another hour.
- Or connect manually: choose the EVL007 network in your phone's Wi-Fi settings and enter the password 12345678.
The app is stuck on "Waiting for charger to connect"
The charger has likely reached your Wi-Fi but hasn't finished registering with your account.
- Check that you chose a 2.4 GHz network. The charger can't connect to 5 or 6 GHz Wi-Fi.
- Update the app. A recent update fixed an issue where some newer chargers couldn't finish registering.
- Check your serial number (see the next question).
- Turn off any VPN on your phone during setup.
- Re-enter your Wi-Fi password. It's case-sensitive.
- Restart the charger at the breaker, wait 30 to 60 seconds, and start setup again.
The app won't accept my serial number
Newer chargers use a longer serial number with an extra set of characters in the middle (for example, JTSE-EVL007-XXX-JHXXXX). If you are running an older version of the app, the app won't recognize the serial number.
Update the app, then enter the full serial number exactly as it appears on the sticker.
Can I change the WiFi settings without the app?
Yes. Connect your phone or computer to the charger's EVL007 hotspot, then go to 192.168.168.1 in a web browser. You still need the app to register the charger with the program.
What do the lights on my charger mean?
The small green light at the top indicates that your charger is powered on.
A solid green bar beneath that top light means your charger is ready to be plugged in.
A flashing blue bar means your charger is connected to a vehicle and charging it.
A red bar means your charger is disconnected from the network.
Charging and energy tracking
Your energy total updates after each session, not while you charge.
My charging energy (kWh) isn't going up
This is normal. The app doesn't count energy in real time. It updates after a session ends and the charger sends it to the SWTCH network.
Unplug your car, then close and reopen the app. Your session should appear shortly after.
My car isn't charging
- Check your car's settings first. Many vehicles wait for a scheduled charging time or stop at a set charge limit.
- Reseat the connector. Unplug and plug back in until it clicks fully into place.
- Make sure the charger is registered in the app.
- Check your breaker. If it has tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, stop, and call your electrician.
Do I need to use the app every time I charge?
No. Once your charger is set up, it starts charging as soon as you plug in.
How do I schedule charging for off-peak hours?
Set a charging schedule in your vehicle's app or settings. The charger follows your car's schedule, so you can charge overnight at off-peak rates.
Can I see my charging history?
The app shows your total energy charged and your weekly usage.
For session-by-session detail, we recommend you check your vehicle's app.
A charging session seems to be missing
Unfortunately, if a session is truly missing, we will not be able to recover it, as we can only pay rewards for energy recorded by the charger.
Your car's app is the best way to cross-check to see if a session is actually missing. If its history shows sessions that aren't in your SWTCH totals:
- Make sure your charger is online and its firmware is up to date.
- Double-check that the charging session in question was completed at home and not at a different private or public charger.
- Contact support with the dates and times, plus a screenshot or export of your vehicle's charging history.
Tip: If you're concerned about the potential for a missed session, compare your totals with your car every week or two so any gap is caught early.
Wi-Fi and connectivity
Your charger needs Wi-Fi for your sessions to count toward your refund and earnings.
What happens if my internet goes down?
After initial setup, your charger keeps charging without internet.
Note that it only saves a limited number of sessions on the device. Once it reconnects, it uploads them and your totals update.
Because storage is limited, reconnect as soon as you can after a longer outage. Failure to do so could result in sessions being lost from your history.
My charger shows as offline
- Check your home internet. Make sure other devices are online.
- Restart your router and wait for it to fully come back up.
- Restart the charger at the breaker. Wait 30 to 60 seconds, then turn it back on.
- Check the signal. Garages can be Wi-Fi dead zones. An extender or mesh node closer to the charger can help.
I changed my router or Wi-Fi password
If your new network has the same name and password as the old one, you don't need to do anything.
If either has changed, turn the charger off at the breaker for a minute, turn it back on, then go through the original setup steps in the app. You'll need to reconnect your charger to continue tracking usage and earning toward your next payout.
App and firmware updates
Payouts and refunds need the latest app and charger firmware.
Why do I need to keep the app and firmware updated?
Payouts, deposit refunds and the current earning rate all require the latest app and charger firmware. If either is out of date, payouts pause until you update. We'll email you if an update is needed.
Turn on automatic app updates and keep your charger connected to Wi-Fi.
The app says to update, but I can't find a new version
New versions sometimes reach the App Store and Google Play a day or two apart. Close and reopen your app store, check again later, or turn on automatic updates.
A firmware update seems stuck
Firmware updates can take 10 minutes or more. Leave the charger powered on and connected, and don't turn off the breaker while it's installing. Give it at least 15 minutes before trying anything else.
My charger is offline or keeps restarting after an update
- Wait 15 minutes. The charger may still be finishing the update.
- Restart the charger once at the breaker. Wait 30 to 60 seconds, then turn it back on.
- Still not reconnecting, or restarting over and over? Contact support and let us know it happened after an update. Don't keep repeating setup.
I can't log in, or my charger disappeared from the app
If your charger or totals disappear for a while, don't remove or re-add the charger. This is usually a temporary service issue.
- Try again in a little while.
- Forgot your password? Use the reset option on the login screen.
- Not resolved within a day? Contact support.
Deposit refunds and payouts
Your deposit comes back after 1,500 kWh, and earnings pay out in $100 increments.
When will I get my $300 deposit back?
Once your charger has delivered 1,500 kWh in total, your deposit is refunded to your original payment method within 3 to 5 business days. That's about 3 to 5 months of average driving. There's no time limit, and you can track your progress in the app.
Your app and firmware must be up to date for the refund to process. If it's been more than 5 business days, check for updates, then contact support.
Do I start earning before my deposit is refunded?
Yes. You start earning and making progress toward your refund at the same time, from your first registered session.
How does my earning rate work?
You earn 3 cents per kWh until you reach 1,500 kWh. After that, your rate rises to 11 cents per kWh automatically. An out-of-date app or firmware can pause earnings at the current rate.
How do earnings payouts work?
Earnings are paid by direct deposit to your bank account in $100 increments. Each time your balance reaches $100, a payout is sent automatically. Payouts are processed securely through Stripe.
Once I hit the threshold for my deposit refund or ongoing earnings, how quickly will I receive my payment?
Earnings are paid into your Stripe account and then sent to the bank account you linked within Stripe. After you hit a threshold for your refund or for payment from charging earnings, you can expect at least 2-5 business days before the funds reach your account.
How do I link or change my bank account?
Open the payouts tab in the app and select Connect with Stripe.
If it already says Automatic Payouts Enabled, your bank account is linked and there's nothing more to do.
If you want to change your account, please sign in to Stripe using the same email used when setting up the connected account. After you log in, you can update your banking details there.
Installation and hardware
For anything electrical, we recommend a licensed electrician.
Can I lower the charger's maximum current?
Yes. If your panel or circuit can't support the full rating, the charger can be limited to 16, 24, 32, 40 or 48 amps with a switch inside the charger. Because it means opening the charger, have a licensed electrician do it, following our derating instructions, which include a video walkthrough.
Chargers shipped before May 2026 need a firmware update before they can be set to 24 amps.
The hardwired model's cable doesn't reach my panel
The hardwired charger comes with a short pre-attached cable for the electrical connection. Depending on where you mount it, your electrician may need to add a junction box or disconnect. Plan this before installation day.
Mounting tips
- Mount into a wall stud wherever you can.
- For drywall or concrete, use anchors rated for your wall type.
- Drill pilot holes and use the correct driver bit size to avoid stripping the screws.
- Missing or damaged hardware? Contact support.
I'm moving. What happens to my charger?
You can take it with you. Once it's installed at your new home, go through the charger setup in the app again and update your address.
If you leave it behind, the new owner can join the program with their own account. Your account, earnings and progress don't transfer. The new owner will need to contact us for support migrating the charger to their account.
Moving outside Canada before reaching 1,500 kWh forfeits the deposit. See the program terms.
